The interim government is going to organize a large-scale conference in Cox’s Bazar from August 24 to 26 to highlight the Rohingya crisis before the international community.
“Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus is scheduled to attend the conference on August 25,” Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said today at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the city.
He said this conference will facilitate the Rohingyas, who took shelter in Cox’s Bazar, to share their problems, hopes and aspirations as well as their dreams directly with international organizations and foreign representatives.
Noting that the interim government is working sincerely to resolve the Rohingya crisis, the press secretary said the government is continuing close discussions with different countries and organizations.
“As part of these efforts, the government has planned to organize three conferences in a large scale on the Rohingya issue, the first of which will begin in Cox’s Bazar on August 24,” Shafiqul Alam said.
The main objective of these conferences is to highlight the Rohingya crisis to the world community, he added.
The press secretary said two more international conferences are scheduled to be held later this year – one in Doha and the largest one in New York in the last week of September.
He said apart from Rohingya representatives, delegates from 40 countries, diplomats based in Dhaka, and representatives of UN agencies would join the Cox’s Bazar conference while a special session with Rohingya representatives will be held on August 24.
In the three-day conference, Shafiqul Alam said, a comprehensive roadmap will be presented for safe repatriation and funding for the displaced Rohingyas.
Due to systematic violence and persecution in Rakhine State, along with the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas have been forced to flee to Bangladesh, he said, adding, so far, nearly 7.50 lakh Rohingyas have taken shelter in Bangladesh, escaping brutal violence in their ancestral homeland of Rakhine.
Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahammad were also present at the briefing.
